What is Craniopathy?

Remember Sacro Occipital Technique (SOT), that wonderfully gentle approach that works with your spine and pelvis? Well, consider Craniopathy as its counterpart, focusing on the incredible system of the dural-meningeal system in your skull!

Understanding Our Cranial Rhythm

Our skulls aren’t just a solid helmet protecting our brains. Strong membranous attachments within the bones of the skull provide a ‘scaffolding’ that holds the brain in place.

This strong dural tissue attachment extends to the sacrum and coccyx, holding the spinal cord and spinal nerves in place.

The brain and spinal cord are bathed in cerebrospinal fluid that has subtle, rhythmic movements influenced by our breath from the diaphragm.  Each time we breathe we influence the dynamics of CSF within the spinal column and brain.

Craniopaths work with this rhythm, called the primary respiratory motion (PRM) or cranial respiratory motion (CRI), and focus on the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

This clear fluid bathes and nourishes our brain and spinal cord and removes waste products, playing a vital role in the health of our nervous system.

Why Craniopathy Matters

When the cranial rhythm or CSF flow is disrupted, it can affect our well-being in various ways.

  • May help people who suffer with headaches and migraines
  • Might reduce jaw tension (TMJ issues)
  • People with sinus problems
  • May help people with sleep difficulties
  • Stress and anxiety

Craniopaths use an incredibly light touch to identify restrictions within the expansion and contraction within the skull’s structure and tissues.

By gently encouraging respiration and healthy movement, the aim is to help improve CSF flow and restore balance, promoting your body’s natural ability to heal itself.

The Cranial Connection to Your Whole Body

Our bodies are intricately interconnected. Your skull houses your brain, the master control center, and cranial nerves affecting your face, hearing, and vision pass through it.

Inside the skull, there’s a network of membranes (the dura) that support the brain and influence CSF flow. Easing tension in the dural membranes may benefit the whole body.

How Craniopathy Works

Tension on the dural membranes within the skull may affect the dynamic movement of CSF.

Craniopaths, with their deep understanding of anatomy, gently contact cranial bones and indirectly the dural membranes to balance CSF movement. This can support healthy CSF flow and, in turn, your body’s overall well-being.

Is Craniopathy Right for You?

Due to its gentle nature, Craniopathy is suitable for people of all ages, from babies to the elderly.

If you’re exploring natural ways to alleviate the issues mentioned earlier, or if you’ve tried other therapies without full success, it might be worth considering.

Craniopathy for Infants and Children

A baby’s skull is incredibly flexible to accommodate the birthing process.

Sometimes, pressures during birth can lead to slight imbalances in the skull’s structure. As the child grows, these imbalances can influence skull growth and development.

Craniopaths gently work to release these birth strains, supporting healthy cranial movement and providing a strong foundation for development.
