What Are The Benefits Of Chiropractic During Pregnancy?

Our patients often tell us they feel so much better after some careful chiropractic care – from reducing nausea to getting better sleep, decreasing overall discomfort, and improving back and pelvic pain and posture…

If you’re a mum-to-be, you may be considering natural and non-invasive ways to help improve your physical health and wellbeing during your pregnancy. Could chiropractic offer these benefits? Is it safe for your baby? Hop on board as we take you through the benefits of chiropractic during pregnancy.

How Can Chiropractic Care Help During Pregnancy?

Pregnancy brings many physical changes to your body. Your posture, centre of balance, and weight distribution, all change significantly. That places a great deal of strain on your spine and pelvis in particular.

Prenatal chiropractic care during pregnancy can help maintain good spinal and pelvic health, or even improve them if you have pre-existing dysfunction in these structures. It can also provide education and advice about various ways to reduce your pain and discomfort in natural, drug-free ways.

But most importantly – chiropractic care is about helping to reduce neuromusculoskeletal pain and discomfort. That includes pregnancy pain and discomfort.

When you seek out chiropractic care during pregnancy, you will receive customised treatment based on your situation. As that changes during your pregnancy, your chiropractic treatment plan will too. As will the advice and support you’ll receive…

What About Chiropractic Care And Breech Deliveries?

As you approach full term, it’s particularly important your baby has room to move into the correct birthing position to help prevent a breech delivery.

The Webster Technique is designed specifically for this. It helps balance your pelvis and reduce intrauterine constraints to give your baby room to get into a natural head-down birth position.

It’s important to note that chiropractic care does NOT physically manipulate your baby’s position in utero. Rather, it focuses on making sure your spine and pelvic structure and alignment are as functional as possible.

This in turn helps create more pelvic room for your baby to grow and move around naturally during gestation. That usually translates to a better, healthier pregnancy and smoother, healthy delivery!

Is Chiropractic Care Beneficial For Your Baby-To-Be?

Prenatal chiropractors specialise in providing care for you and your baby. When you’re healthy, comfortable, and not stressed by pain and discomfort, that’s going to help with a healthier pregnancy and baby.

Why Should I Have Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy?

A recent Australian study highlighted some reasons why women decide on chiropractic care during pregnancy. Chief amongst them are:

  • Concerns about the amount of back and pelvic pain being experienced and recognition that it could be abnormal
  • Wanting alternative pain management strategies after finding their pregnancy-related back and pelvic pain is often ‘normalised’ (and therefore not addressed) even when extreme or potentially abnormal.
  • Psychosocial worries about the impact of the pain on their daily life and potential complications during delivery

The study also found that, although duration and extent varied, the participants all reported experiencing improved functionality and pain reduction, sometimes quite quickly, after chiropractic treatment.

Their mental health improved as well with better pain management strategies provided by their chiropractic care, reducing their stress and anxiety.

Our own patients also tell us they experience:

A reduction in nausea

We don’t know why chiropractic care can help some mums-to-be suffer less nausea but experience tells us it can.

Improved posture

As your pregnancy develops, maintaining good posture can become problematic, if not downright challenging! Regular chiropractic adjustments are an ideal way to keep your spine and pelvis and thus your posture, balanced and aligned throughout your pregnancy.

Better able to avoid injuries

Whilst we can’t promise you’ll be able to leap over tall buildings in a single bound after a visit, chiropractic care can take good care of your musculoskeletal system. In particular, it focuses on improving your posture and body mechanics.

When those are good, your overall mobility and balance should also improve, which can help you avoid pregnancy-related injuries.

Better sleep

Many mums-to-be find they have trouble sleeping. You just can’t get comfortable and that pain and discomfort in your back and pelvis keep you awake for hours on end.

That’s not good for you or your baby.

Chiropractic care helps by making you feel more comfortable. That reduces your stress levels, encourages you to relax, and often lets you sleep much better too. All without recourse to painkillers and sleeping tablets!

Faster Labour Recovery

We love it when our patients check in with us after having their baby to tell us the process was a breeze and they’ve recovered quickly thanks to their good spinal and pelvic health! An incident-free, easy birth and recovery is always a great thing.

Ongoing Wellness After Pregnancy

Some of our mums even decide to continue with postnatal chiropractic care and get paediatric chiropractic care for their babies too. This is a good way to deal with some of those lingering aches and pains.

Adapting Chiropractic Techniques For Each Trimester

One of the main benefits of chiropractic care is how it can be adapted to suit your stage of pregnancy.

First Trimester

During your first trimester, chiropractic care will focus on gentle adjustments, pelvic alignment, and managing early pregnancy discomfort with soft tissue work and lifestyle advice.

Second Trimester

Adjustments and positioning are adapted to accommodate your growing pregnancy. They may be done lying on your side or sitting, with the use of special supportive equipment.

Your chiropractor may also use the Webster Technique to help improve your pelvic alignment to give your baby as much room as possible to grow and move normally.

We may also introduce gentle exercises to help build and sustain core strength and flexibility as your centre of balance and weight-bearing changes.

Third Trimester

Your adjustments will change to low-force and gentle. The focus is on pain management and mobility as your spine and pelvis begin to feel the weight of your pregnancy.

If necessary, the Webster Technique may be continued, whilst soft tissue therapy is often used to help relieve tension.

You’ll probably also receive some education and information about maintaining good posture, and about labour positions as you approach your delivery date.

Conclusion: The Benefits Of Chiropractic During Pregnancy

Chiropractic care offers a safe and effective way to manage some of the common issues experienced during pregnancy. In particular, it can be very effective for managing spinal and pelvic pain and discomfort.

Alleviating these often has flow-on health benefits such as better quality sleep, improved posture and overall function, stress reduction, and of course, a healthier happier pregnancy.
